Beacon
It warns you of a raid on your holding in advance and opens a response window: you can dig a trench or recall your army on the road.
On a high hill, an iron basket full of dry wood. The moment the sentry sees a cloud of dust on the horizon, he lights the fire; the flame leaps from hill to hill, and the news reaches the holding before the fastest rider.
The beacon brings distant danger near. A holding woken at midnight meets the army at its gate at dawn with weapons already in hand.
