Trebuchet

The stones it hurls land on the roofs behind the wall.

A giant arm assembled for days in the workshop, its counterweight heavier than a house. The crew reckon the angle, draw the rope taut and let go; the stone climbs into the sky with a long whistle, then comes down on a roof.

The trebuchet strikes not at the battle but at the enemy's tomorrow. Every building it brings down is a season the other side must spend rebuilding.
