Holding and buildings

Your holding grows through twelve standard buildings. Each building rises to level 20, every level costs more and takes longer than the last, and as a building matures you choose its specialization. Deeds won at the auction are also placed in your holding, but they aren't built; they're covered in Auction and Tender.

The twelve buildings

BuildingWhat it doesSpecialization
PalaceEvery level speeds up all your construction.
SawmillThe axes fall at dawn; as the camp grows, more timber flows into your holding.Level 8
QuarryThe chisels splitting the rock never fall silent; as the Quarry grows, more stone flows to your walls and your storehouse.Level 10
FoundryThe furnaces burn day and night; as the Foundry grows, so does the iron bound for sword and armor.Level 9
FarmAn army's belly is filled in the field; as your fields grow, more grain reaches the storehouse.Level 11
MarketEach level brings one more merchant, and each merchant carries units.
StorehouseSets how much of each resource you can hold.
BarracksUnlocks recruiting, and each level lets you recruit faster.Level 12
StableWhere cavalry is raised: the Barracks trains foot soldiers, the Stable trains horsemen.Level 8
WorkshopSiege engines are built here: the ram breaks walls, the trebuchet wrecks buildings.Level 9
ShipyardLets you build boats, and as it grows each boat carries more troops.Level 11
WallWhile it stands, the city is closed: a raider must first bring it down with rams, the garrison fights from the battlements, and every course of stone makes the defense stronger.Level 11

A building's entry lists its values, its legend and its specializations in detail; each name in the table takes you to its entry in the Codex.

Build queue

  • Every holding has its own build queue, which holds up to 8 jobs.
  • Jobs run in order: a new job starts the moment the last job in the queue finishes.
  • You pay up front: the resources leave your storage the moment a job enters the queue.
  • You can queue the same building several times in a row; each job targets the next level.
  • A single job can take at most 6 h 6 min; even the highest levels never take longer.
  • No building waits on another: even with your Palace at level 1, you can build all 12 buildings. The Shipyard is the one exception: there must be sea within 8 km of your holding.

Canceling

When you cancel a job in the queue, the cost you paid comes back, minus a deduction:

In the last 24 hFee
Cancellation #15%
Cancellation #210%
Cancellation #330%
Cancellation #4 and after50%

Canceling is free and doesn't count during the first 5 minutes after a job enters the queue. The deduction grows with the number of cancellations you've made in the last 24 hours; the count is shared across all your holdings and resets on a rolling 24-hour window, not at midnight. A refund only fills your storage up to its cap.

Cost and time

Each level costs a fixed multiple of the level before it; that multiple differs from building to building (the Wall climbs most steeply). Build time also grows steeply with each level, and these speed it up:

  • Palace: each level raises build speed by 4%. At level 20, the Palace makes all construction 1.8 times faster.
  • House Dedalon: adds 10% to build speed, stacking additively with the Palace's speed.
  • Master Builder: a Master Builder won at the auction finishes your next construction instantly.

The tables below show each building's cost at selected levels (timber / stone / iron), the total spent up to that level, and its build time with Palace 1 and Palace 10. House effects aren't included.

Palace

The Palace is the heart of your holding: it sets your build speed, and settlers and governors are trained here. Your holding starts with Palace 1.

Milestones

Some levels bring your holding a new ability or a mark of glory:

BuildingLevelWhat it brings
Palace10Second holding: you can train settlers and found a new holding.
Palace15Banner: your arms fly over your holding, visible to everyone on the map.
Barracks15Army banner: your marching army carries your arms.
Wall1Raid warning: alerts you to an incoming raid in its final minutes.
Wall3Trench digging: your wall digs a trench during the response window.
Wall6Fortress: your holding is drawn on the map with its walls.
Wall8Inner granary: the goods a raider can find outside are halved.
Wall13Redoubt: the trench's strength reaches its peak.
Farm6Traveling merchant: overflowing grain turns into another resource.

Level 20 of every standard building carries a top-level title: High Lord for the Palace, Lord of the Forest for the Sawmill, Lord of the Quarry for the Quarry, Master Smith for the Foundry, Bountiful land for the Farm, Quartermaster for the Storehouse, Merchant Prince for the Market, Marshal for the Barracks, Master of Horse for the Stable, Siege Master for the Workshop, Admiral of the Fleet for the Shipyard and Castellan for the Wall. A top-level title earns a line in your chronicle and a badge on your Charter.

Buildings and grain

Every building except the Farm carries a grain cost that grows with its level (Grain). When you upgrade a building, make sure your Farm keeps up.

Demolition

In a holding whose wall is down, a trebuchet knocks levels off a random standard building (Siege). The Palace never drops below level 1, and auction buildings can't be demolished. Lost levels are won back by building them again.
